Elegant Design and HD Performance

Full HD LCD Panel

The LC-40D78UN features full HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution, for the sharpest picture possible. The CCFL-backlit LCD panel provides high contrast ratios for deep blacks and vibrant colors during both dark and bright scenes.

High brightness means you can position the LC-40D78UN virtually anywhere--near a window, a door or other light source--and the picture is still vivid. A wide 176-degree viewing angle means the whole family gets to enjoy it.

Built-in Tuners

The LC-40D78UN includes ATSC/NTSC tuners to receive off-air broadcasts, as well as digital cable QAM capability for receiving non-scrambled digital cable programming. It's ready for available DTV and analog TV programming.

Three HDMI Inputs

For convenient connection to digital devices, three HDMI inputs are provided, along with two HD component inputs, for a grand total of five 1080p compatible inputs. A pair of composite inputs is also provided for non-HD sources.

120Hz Fine Motion Advanced

Sharp uses a unique algorithm to create images that help smooth sharp edges on moving objects, like a running play in football, a player swinging a bat or a car chase. By creating new images and filling in the gaps, motion appears smoother and less jumpy. The result is a smoother picture with more detail.

120Hz Fine Motion Advanced helps smooth motion, for a sharp picture on moving objects.
Sharp LC-40D78UN Gaming Mode
Vyper Drive game mode helps to eliminate the lag time between the game console and TV.
OPC (Optical Picture Control)

Most television viewing does not take place under perfect lighting conditions--sometimes you watch TV with daylight streaming in the windows, and other times you watch in the middle of the night while your spouse tries to sleep beside you. Sharp's OPC (Optical Picture Control) system automatically adjusts the TV's brightness level based on ambient light, so you'll be able to see a bright picture in a bright room and a not too bright one when the room is pitch black--automatically. Think of OPC as an automatic light-sensing dimmer for your television.

Vyper Drive

Vyper Drive game mode helps to eliminate the lag time between the game console and TV. When Game Mode is activated, the signal is streamlined resulting in transmission 5x faster than normal mode.

Solid Audio

A pair of bottom-mounted speakers provide 16 Watts (8w + 8w) of audio, enough to fill most rooms. Sharp's "Sound Surround" feature creates a surround effect using just two speakers.

Wall-Mount Ready

Easily remove the included table stand and you're ready for wall-mounting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comment about sound quality, February 5, 2011
This review is from: Sharp AQUOS LC40D78UN 40-Inch 1080p LCD TV (Electronics)
I own this 40" 78 series Sharp Aquos TV. First said, The picture quality is outstanding, and can be tweaked to an infinite level with all the in depth menu settings. The speakers are on the bottom and fire downward. I find the sound to be very good on all inputs EXCEPT for TV where you are pulling your signal thru a coax cable. For whatever reason sound level is way down on that input. But on HDMI, component, etc sound level is strong and actually sounds pretty good. But to note, this weak sound on the TV input seems to be the norm, as I have noticed that effect on my other non Sharp flat screen TVs as well. I have my Sharp TV sitting in an entertainment center, so that serves as an amplifing box and pushes the sounds out in a good strong level. One GREAT thing about this (and most Sharp TVs) is that they have the RCA audio output jacks that can be connected to the older style receivers that do not have the optical input.
I just plug my red/white audio cable jacks from the... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great 1st HD TV, April 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Sharp AQUOS LC40D78UN 40-Inch 1080p LCD TV (Electronics)
I bought this for our 1st HD tv, for our living room. It is of course not as good as a $1,000 TV but I could not afford that price. I was concerned with the speaker issue several people discussed on thier reviews...BUT there is NO issue....the sound is great and I usually only have it at about 15. No need for a bigger speaker. ALSO someone complained it did not come wiht a manual...but it does, and even if they did not have one you can get it online to download. Additionally, I was a little confused in the set-up but that was due to the cable box not the tv. All in all...we love this tv for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp AQUOS LC40D78UN, December 22, 2010
This review is from: Sharp AQUOS LC40D78UN 40-Inch 1080p LCD TV (Electronics)
We purchased this television about a month ago and so far we're very happy with its picture and performance. We did pay considerably less buying it locally (just under $600).

Unlike another comment, I had no problem with the remote control, though since adding a satellite receiver to the television, I find myself rarely using the TV remote. The HD picture is just fantastic and even SD television is a far improvement over our previous CRT SD television.

My only criticism of the unit is the sound, which appears to be directed toward the rear of the unit. As we've got it sitting in an enclosed cabinet, it took a little getting used to, but is no longer an issue.

For the price we paid, this was an excellent buy.
